If you want to upgrade your Flash Player on Firefox, Adobe wants you to install their download manager first. It just doesn’t work on my computer so I had to find another way.

It is pretty simple to manually install the latest flash player but not really easy to find on Adobe site, so I post the direct link here for those who need it.

Flash builder Eclipse language issue

I just installed the new Windows 7, just to try and see if it is ready to replace my old XP. So far, I still don’t know how to disable the mouse acceleration (not speed)… anyway.

So I am in France, but use my OS and software in English. For some unknown reason, Flash Builder decided that I should use French language (OS location maybe), even though I choose English in the installer ! Thank you very much Adobe, but please let me choose my language in the future.

As you can imagine, no way to change the language, even reinstalling doesn’t help.

But… good news everyone ! There is a fix. Edit your eclipse.ini and add “-Duser.language=en” somewhere after “-vmarg”.

For exemple, I use the Eclipse 3.5.1 and my eclipse.ini looks like this :

We want Flex Builder for Linux

Adobe is planning to halt the Linux Flex Builder development (currently in alpha stage) !

I am on windows only because of Adobe products, mainly Flex. I would like to «format c:» and work on my ubuntu

Preloader deep linking bug still not resolved

If you try to implement the deep linking for flash/flex using SWFAddress or similar technology, you will notice the “#” character (anchor) somewhere in the URL, this is the delimiter for the interpreted URL string by the browser. If the string following the anchor change in the address bar, the browser will not change (nor refresh) the currently displayed page, instead it will try to find that anchor in it’s body. In the ordinary HTML based pages, the browser simply scrolls to the anchor somewhere in the page. For example, on this page I defined two anchors: top anchor and bottom anchor. If you click on those links, you’ll notice that the browser only scrolls the page.

Whatever, long story short, this feature can be used to navigate inside flash content as flash can read the URL and act accordingly, just by changing the URL string after the anchor. That’s great, really. The problem is that there is an issue in flash player or Flex (not quite sure) filled more than a year ago preventing the Flex preloader to show. This is not very important if your application’s SWF size is small enough, but when you have moderately large application, not seeing the feedback while preloading can actually be a real problem for your customers.

But hey, you can do something about it if it bothers you as much as it bothers me: vote for it

Great news everyone, Adobe is about to open the RTMP (Real Time Messaging Protocol).

RTMP provides an enhanced and efficient way to deliver rich content. Developers and companies will have free and open access to the documented RTMP specification to help enable unparalleled delivery of video, audio and data in the open AMF, SWF, FLV and F4V formats compatible with Adobe Flash Player.

…and some bad news as well :

the open RTMP specification will not include Adobe’s unique secure RTMP measures, nor will the license that accompanies the specification allow developers to circumvent such measures. However, developers will be free to use their own technological measures to secure content.
